Why grain and pattern repeat matter
Most online fabric calculators treat every piece as a rectangle that can be rotated to save fabric. Real home-dec and upholstery fabric usually can't be — a directional print or a nap has to run the same way on every piece, which is exactly why a boxing strip or a curtain panel can need more fabric than the raw dimensions suggest. When your fabric has a repeating pattern, each piece also has to be cut so the motif lines up with its neighbours, which rounds every cut up to the next full repeat — sometimes a lot more than the piece itself.
These calculators account for both, and for a half-drop repeat (used on a lot of botanical and geometric prints) specifically, which most calculators don't handle at all.
